The local government building was built as a municipal hall by the American government in 1926, eleven years before the place was declared as a chartered city by then President Manuel L. Quezon in 1937.

Depicting the American architecture in the 1920s, the Davao City Hall was the latest infrastructure in the country declared as a historical site in 2012, with the unveiling rites of a marker by Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio and Ludivico Badoy, chair of the National Historical Commission.
