The new Amihan Team is composed of 27 young boys and girls who are being honed by the same trainor and father figure responsible for producing champs in the first batch of the Amihan Boys. These are the young local skimboarders in my beloved birthplace of Mati, Davao Oriental.
Cebu Pacific Air’s Smile Magazine June issue features Davao region, which includes my birthplace Mati City, and my home, Davao. Photos of mine included
In my birthplace of Mati, Davao Oriental, lies Lawigan, a hidden coastal community dotted by rugged rock formations, mangroves and white sands interspersed with coconut trees and patches of civilization with huts built on shorelines. The road to Lawigan is quite narrow and perched on a precipice, before going down at sea level again.
In Baganga, Davao Oriental, people are rebuilding their lives, houses, livelihood, and spirit. It was a busy coastal village on the brink of recovering from heavy wounds after the Typhoon Bopha tragedy.
(downloadable poster above) DESTINATION MATI: A TRAVEL PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP SERIES BY RHONSON NG AND JOJIE ALCANTARA (June 16-17, 2012) In photo: Dahican at Daybreak (Mati, Davao Oriental) Jojie Alcantara, May 2012 Dahican, the popular and most beautiful beach in my birthplace Mati, is an extended strip of stunning white beach lined with coconut trees, facing sparkling turquoise waters that ebb and flow wildly into the Pacific, inviting adventurous skimboarders to surf in glee. But there is more to Mati than sand and sea, and glorious island hopping. When I am in Mati, I always arrange for my early (4am) sunrise shoot, to capture early risers, and fishermen returning from their catch, while locals run to assist with the boat. Here, they are able to get free meals from the fisherman. In line with the coming PUJADA BAY FESTIVAL of Mati this June, we are announcing our travel photography workshop on June 16-17, which includes the sunrise shoot along Dahican. Limited slots only.
