Davao celebrates Kadayawan 2012

An excerpt from my article, Colors of Kadayawan sa Dabaw 2012 Photography © Jojie Alcantara I am lucky to have spanned a decade of covering Mindanao’s most colorful and biggest festival in the islands. Through my work in the media as a TV anchor, columnist and photographer, I have been able to document more than a bird’s eye view of the dazzling pomp and spectacle that is Davao’s Kadayawan Festival, which earned its prestige as one of the most beautiful ethnic celebrations in the country. With this year’s theme of “Ten Tribes, One Vibe”, the city has fully embraced the legacy of our ethnicity and diversity, while paying respects to the traditional rituals of our ancestors in thanksgiving to spirits who watch over our domain and the bounty of harvest that we are blessed to be receiving.   Kadayawan, from the dialect “madayaw” meaning well and good, is a celebration of the goodness and harmony in life. Abreeza shines in Kadayawan’s Pamulak Float Parade

Abreeza shines in Pamulak Float Parade Text and photos by Jojie Alcantara, published in SunStar Davao Aug. 25 Around 115 contingents participated in what was touted to be the biggest number of delegates who joined the 26th Kadayawan sa Dabaw’s most festive Pamulak or Floral Float Parade. Uniquely designed floats of various shapes and sizes showcasing the abundant vegetation of Davao Region snaked their way along the assigned routes where a huge crowd is scattered from as far as the starting point in Magsaysay Avenue. With the biggest win, Abreeza’s first experience with the floral float competition earned it a deserving championship with a whooping P500,000 in cash prize for the Open or Big Category. Abreeza’s float was explained as thus: “Like a breath of fresh air, Abreeza Mall epitomizes the Davaoeno’s culture and lifestyle. It’s free-spirited, child-like icon depicts a celebration of life, together with the children happily running and joined together by the festive flaglets.
